What Is SAP Joule? Definition, Assistants, Agents, and Studio
SAP Joule is SAP's AI brand covering assistants, autonomous agents, and Joule Studio. Here's what each piece does and which SAP systems actually support it.
SAP Joule
SAP Joule is SAP's AI brand, covering conversational assistants embedded inside SAP applications, autonomous agents that carry out multi-step business processes, and Joule Studio, the tool for building custom agents. All of it runs on SAP Business Technology Platform, and none of it works on classic ECC.
Joule started in 2023 as a single copilot: a chat window layered over SAP's interfaces that could answer questions and pull up records. By 2026 it had grown into two distinct tiers. Joule Assistants are the conversational layer, over 50 of them mapped to specific business outcomes across Finance, HR, Supply Chain, Procurement, and Customer Experience. Joule Agents are the autonomous layer: they don't wait for a question, they execute a defined goal across multiple steps, sometimes coordinating with other agents on the same process.
Which agents are actually available depends on the module and the deployment model. A Finance team might have the Cash Management Agent and Accounting Accruals Agent live; an HR team gets Joule in payroll. None of it activates on S/4HANA's predecessor, ECC, which is one reason SAP ties its AI roadmap so closely to migration timing.
