SAP Renamed Its Partner Certification. Here's What to Actually Check

TL;DR

SAP BTP competency is now SAP Business AI Platform competency, effective June 30. What changed, what didn't, and the questions to ask any partner claiming AI expertise.

SAP Renamed Its Partner Certification. Here's What to Actually Check

Effective June 30, 2026: SAP BTP competency → SAP Business AI Platform (BAIP) competency, automatic transition, no exam or review.

The development

  • Rename effective June 30, 2026 — automatic for all existing BTP-certified partners.
  • October 2026: updated specialization structures and revised product coverage aligned to SAP's AI-first portfolio.
  • January 2027: new knowledge and proficiency requirements activate, with safeguarding periods for partners requalifying.

What it actually means

  • The badge changed June 30; the underlying bar stays the old BTP requirement until at least October.
  • A partner citing "SAP Business AI Platform competency" in July 2026 cleared the old BTP bar — not demonstrated Joule Studio delivery, clean-core migration work, or AI-specific capability.
  • The credential measures AI delivery skill only once the January 2027 requirements take effect, and only for partners who requalify.

Five questions to ask any partner citing this certification:

  1. When did they earn the underlying BTP competency, and has the team changed since?
  2. Can they name a specific Joule Studio or agent-building engagement delivered, not just platform administration?
  3. How many consultants have hands-on Level C/D clean-core extensibility experience?
  4. What's their plan for January 2027 requalification?
  5. Can they point to a reference customer where data governance was solved before the AI use case?

What to watch for

October 2026's specialization update. Demonstrated-experience requirements (Joule Studio, Business Data Cloud, clean-core migration) signal a real AI capability bar. A cosmetic update means the BAIP badge stays a legacy credential through at least January 2027.
