What Is SAP BTP? SAP Business Technology Platform Explained

TL;DR

SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) is the technical layer behind SAP's cloud portfolio, running integration, extension, data, and AI services like Joule.

SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP)

SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) is the technical layer underneath SAP's cloud portfolio, providing integration, application extension, data management, and the AI services, including AI Core and Generative AI Hub, that SAP Joule agents and the wider SAP Business AI Platform branding are built on top of.

BTP predates the current AI push by years; it was originally SAP's answer to the question of how customers extend and integrate S/4HANA without touching the core system. That original purpose is exactly what makes it central to clean core and AI now. Extensions built on BTP, rather than as direct modifications to S/4HANA, are what keep a system at extensibility Level C or D, and a clean, well-structured BTP layer is what lets a Joule agent call an extension reliably instead of guessing at custom logic.

For IT leaders, BTP is worth thinking of as infrastructure, not a product you buy separately from SAP AI. Whether a company is on RISE or GROW, its BTP configuration, meaning which services are provisioned, how identity and connectivity are set up, and how much custom development has accumulated there, shapes what Joule can actually do once it's turned on.
